Publicado: 2013-03-15

Those with osteoarthritis of the knee had an opportunity to learn about MAKOplasty, a procedure powered by a robotic arm, at East Cooper Medical Center's free health fair this past weekend.Designed to relieve pain and restore range of motion, the procedure powered by the robotic arm, is the only one of its kind in South Carolina.MAKOplasty is a robotic arm assisted partial knee resurfacing procedure designed to relieve the pain caused by joint degeneration due to osteoarthritis (OA).

By selectively targeting the part of your knee damaged by OA, your surgeon can resurface your knee while sparing the healthy bone and ligaments surrounding it.MAKOplasty Partial Knee Resurfacing can enable surgeons to precisely resurface only the arthritic portion of the knee and preserve healthy tissue and bone.It facilitates optimal implant positioning to result in a more natural feeling knee following surgery and results in a more rapid recovery and shorter hospital stay than traditional total knee replacement surgery.

As a knee arthroplasty procedure, MAKOplasty is typically covered by Medicare insures- check with your private health insurers. In some cases it may be performed on an outpatient basis depending on what your surgeon determines is the right course of treatment for you.More than 150 people attended the event which also included free health screenings for cholesterol, diabetes, blood pressure, osteoporosis, foot screenings and ergonomic assessments.
